All About The Car Bike Rack

Posted By on July 30, 2010

A car bike rack is an efficient way of transporting a bicycle to long distances. Bike racks have been developed especially for the rear of pickup trucks, but nowadays most automobiles (even buses) can be attached with a car bike rack.

Car bike racks are categorized under three particular categories: a roof rack, a hitch mount trunk rack, as well as a strap on one. All of the types actually have both bad and good points. However, not all vehicles can use just about any type of car bike rack.

Some specialty racks are designed especially for pick up trucks or inside certain van types or SUVs. Quite a few truck racks are utilized above the location of the bed, allowing space for further storage underneath. Other racks are armed with special mounts that are attached to rear-mounted tires for the spares and rear ladders found on some types of conversion vans.

Strap on trunk racks are the cheapest of the bike rack kinds, with prices ranging from forty dollars to one hundred and forty dollars. Straps attached to the frame of the rack are connected to the trunk of the car, hatchback, or perhaps the rear bumper. The frame of the bike, on the other hand, rests on the support arms that have been coated with plastic.

Better versions of the strap-on trunk have been installed with padded bars or indented cradles for supporting the frame during the ride. Typically, a strap-on trunk rack can carry up to three bikes. But while this type of bike rack is cheap and can fit many vehicles, it can cause more damage on the automobile and the bikes themselves than other types of bike rack.

Hitch-mount racks have various sizes to match various types of vehicle. There are hitch-mount racks that are designed for most cars and small car-based SUVs. Others can be used on pickups and truck-based SUVs. Prices of the hitch-mount racks range from $100 (for racks that support one bike only) to $400. Some hitch-mount racks have been built specially in order to secure the bicycles that are placed in mounting trays; others require strapping the bikes on to the rack.

Roof racks can be attached to a pre-existing roof rack as well as crossbars that are usually found on the minivans, SUVs, and station wagons. Some roof racks, on the other hand, can be attached by mounting the feet and also the clips to the upper doorframe or rain gutters of a vehicle.

If a vehicle has been readily armed with a set of roof racks or crossbars, a fundamental rack costs less than fifty dollars for every bike. If a vehicle is not equipped with a roof rack or crossbar, total cost can be up to a hundred and twenty five dollars to a well two hundred dollars. When selecting a roof rack as bike carrier, consider the particular technique of mounting the bike.

Some roof racks make use of a fork-mount rack that clamps on to the front-wheel fork of the bike. The disadvantage with this type of roof rack is that the wheel at the frontal part needs to be gotten rid of and placed somewhere else.

The advantage, though, is that the bike is a lot easier to manage or control whenever it is up on the roof with some unique frame shapes that can be very easily accommodated. Upright mounts support the bike by clamping on to the frame or by being attached to the pedal crank. The front wheel does not have to be removed but some unusual frames won’t fit.
