How To Fight Alcohol Addiction
knowledge | March 10, 2010
People who have never tasted alcohol did themselves the biggest favor of the century. I sometimes think I should never have started drinking because stopping has been such a difficulty for years. But with time I managed to quit my habit and enforce a new personality. To be able to do this too I have a little bit of advice you might find useful.
The company you share with contributes a great deal to how well you cope with the new transition. The friends I had hardly thought twice about spending a huge sum of money on alcohol within hours. Secretly I realized that this was going to be my downfall because I saw nothing wrong with our condition because we were always together.
After I started living on my own it became easier to control myself and not make decisions based on the general feeling and perception. From this view point I was able to see the sort of person I had become because in the thick of things I was not able to see my downfall because, since we were all similar, it didn’t seem like there was anything wrong. But seeing what I had become in the peace of my new home I eventually managed to control my alcohol intake.
There is no real point in trying to quit alcohol when you don’t have anything to replace it with. This is about finding an alternative activity to replace your alcohol addiction so that you have your thoughts occupied. What I did was buff up the entertainment in my flat by getting video and board games as well as a left handed electric guitar. So when I thought of drinking I would drink at home and I would not even think about abusing alcohol, it was fun.
Sometimes people who are addicted to alcohol are abusing it because they will be trying to fill an empty void in their life. The empty void in my life had suddenly become not having friends that shared the same mindset as mine. So I sought to make sure that I surrounded myself with people who thought like I did. And even though I wasn’t anticipating having a girlfriend I eventually met a woman who represented all that and more. It is more like sorting your clothes in the home storage shelves if you want to enjoy wearing new clothes.
Alcoholics are usually slim and underfed. But there are others that are well fed, but this is rare. The point I’m trying to stress here is that of eating more food and taking care of ones body. I realized how I cut down on my intake of alcohol when I noticed how much I was missing out on by drinking instead of eating more. This is good replacement therapy but it must be done in moderation.
Anyone with an addiction problem can get over it if they focus for long enough to see themselves changing. Just never give up and lose sight of your goal whatever you do. Be sure to suck the power out of your addiction like a dyson upright vacuum cleaner would suck out dirt form carpet.
