Stripped Marlin Madness!

knowledge | July 23, 2010

Another day in cabo san lucas fishing for stripped marlin. Anyone who has caught one of these fish know they put up a huge fight. Well it was about four in the morning when the alarm went off, time to roll out of bed for another day of tag and release fishing. There is nothing better than spending the day on the water with some good buddies collecting data on such a remarkable species. So as we got to the boat our friend and captain was already at the docks warming up the boat and buying bait from one of our locals. So once we got there it was just time to untie the boat and push off for a day on the water. Well once we got past the port captain on the way out of the harbor, we stated to talk about where we wanted to fish for the day.

Once arriving to the spot where the birds were feeding it was like marlin madness. I mean there was about 15 marlin I could see right at first, and I am sure there was more below. I told the guys to pull in all the lures and put on live bait since that’s what there feeding on. I got us right up on a nice sized marlin and we got a bait right in front of his nose, and he took it. The reel started screaming, and I think from the co motion of one fish being hooked up we hooked up two more right away. So now we have 3 marlin hooked up and its a mad house in the cockpit of the boat, three guys fishing and one guy running around getting tags ready. Well needless to say that day we tagged and released over 10 stripped marlin, making it one of the best days of marlin fishing for us.

We never take any game fish from our waters as they are becoming over fished. So please remember when fishing only keep what you need, and just take pictures, your friends at home will like the pictures just as much as three of four coolers full of fish. And when you can go check out save the pacific, there a new non profit that are dedicated to helping protect and preserve our fragile oceans. Starting To Fish: Begin With A Closed Face Reel

knowledge | June 3, 2010

Many learner anglers will begin their hobby in the first place, with the purchase of a rod and reel as a set; but that being said, many will buy the rod and the reel separately, and may need some help on what reel to get first. Some of the best ways of deciding on a starter reel is to ask other anglers; to join a local club, or to go on a beginners’ fishing school where tackle can be rented.  One of the most popular selections is the closed face, or spincast reel.

So Where to Start?

Simply because they are about the easiest to use and cheap compared to other types and easy to come by. Spincast reels are the choice for parents who want to introduce their youngsters to fish – but not simply for the young, they are also great for the novice  fisherman.  As they do not have a rotating spool to overun, fouling the line, the problem of backlash is solved.

With an absolute plethora of reel manufacturers, choosing a first reel can be a complicated & confusing minefield: Abu Garcia, Zebco, Sage, Shakespeare, & Shimano…the list of manufacturers is almost limitless. In these high-tech days, a trawl (apologies for the pun) online also produces a mind-boggling array of choices, but does offer what are generally the best discounts to be found.

Suggested Close Face Reels?

A great range of reels is widely-regarded those made by Abu Garcia and among their extensive tried-and-tested range is the Abumatic series, and a good example is the Abu Garcia Abumatic 576i Spincast Reel, featuring innovations such as level-wind mechanisms (oscillating spools), and improved drags for fighting bigger game fish. They are relatively tangle-free (line memory not being such a problem) and provide comparatively long, smooth casts. More recent updates include the use of modern alloys, making the reel lighter yet still long-lasting; and are easy to maintain.

More features:
• Ultra-smooth spool drag system
• Duragear drive
• Instant Anti-Reverse
• Titanium nitride line guide
• Dual rotating swing-arm pick-up pins
• Left/Right hand retrieve
• Comfort Touch™ thumb button
• Pre-spooled with 110 yards of 8 lb. Berkley Trilene XL Line

For the more technically-minded, this reel has a gear ratio of 3.6:1 (meaning for every one turn of the reel handle, the bail arm will make 3.6, 360 degree rotations).

The choice of fishing reel is a personal one but, famous for excellence in fishing tackle Abu Garcia’s Abumatic series is a great entry point. Suitable for the
novice, youngster, and even the more experienced angler; the Abu Garcia Abumatic 576i Spincast Reel is a good mid-priced example of a close face fishing reel.
