Article 109 weeds and crappie How Do they relate?

Crappie are not built for speed or power and they like to stay close to shallow water for there is plenty of structure and where most of their crappie food is located. The food chain will be the thickest where plankton is the thickest, which normally is located in large flats and bays on the wind ward side. the crappie is a very popular game fish that goes by a number of different names throughout the country such as calico bass, speckled bass, speckled perch, white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass and papermouth. You can use crappie baits like crappie jigs tipped with soft plastic grubs and wax worms. Crappie live baits like crappie minnows, shiners, small gizzard shad, maggots, panfish leeches, and crayfish will work well too.

The white perch will relate to weeds in different ways. When you are crappie fishing in lakes and reservoirs that have large areas of weedy vegetation, look for suspended crappies any where from 5 to 15ft of the bottom in 25 to 30 feet of water. The The paper mouth will suspend off a drop off lip in the bottom contour during the middle of the day and when there is direct sunlight they will suspend there too.The speckled perch will also suspend at drop off points during cold front conditions when the fish are in a negative feeding pattern. To entice the strawberry bass which are in a neutral or negative feeding mood you can use popular crappie fishing jigs such as the Flu Flu, Chubby Jig, Puddle Jumper, Zetabait Wobbly Eye Jig, Custom Jigs & Spin Shrimpo, Blue Fox Foxee Jig, and the Lindy – Little Joe Timber Jig tipped with crappie live baits such as wax worms, maggots, crappie minnows, shiners, redworms, live nymphs, or crayfish. To ad some flash for even more attraction add a safety pin spinner to your crappie jig, or switch up your crappie bait to one to a popular crappie spinner bait such as a Blakemore Road Runner, Tad’s Cricket Spin,Terminator Tiny T, and the Bomber Mini – Whacker. To catch crappie you may want to verticle jig your crappie spinner baits to a vertical or horizontal depth that is eye level to thepapermouth.

The white perch will many times suspend at the bottom edge of beds at the base when they are in a active feeding mood. Under favorable weather conditions there will be entire schools of  white perch that will locate here as long as the crappie food lasts. During heavy feeding periods a regular crappie jig with a plastic grub will catch crappie. This concentration of paper mouth will normally occur in the late afternoon.

Schools of calico bass that were suspended along the base of weed edge lines will many times move horizontally along the weed line spending at a depth of 5 to 8 feet below the surface. This movement typically happens in the evening near sunset. Under ideal weather conditions you can sometimes see calico bass coming to the surface and feeding as far as 100 feet away from the edge of the weed line. Right before night fall is a great time to catch crappie with a flyrod and a floating crappie jig. This one of the few times that paper mouth like to feed on the surface.

We hope the information in this article about Speckled Bass. Have a great day!

Catching crappie in hill land reservoirs

Hill land reservoirs much like flatland reservoirs hold large populations of crappie any trophy crappie will be there for the taking. Crappies have some amazing names that local fisherman have given them over the years such as calico bass, speckled bass, speckled perch, white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass, and paper mouth.

Hill land reservoirs have many fingers and branches that originate from the main basin of the original river channel. These reservoirs are much deeper that flatland reservoirs but they are not as wide because these reservoirs are constricted by the adjoining hills. The main creek or river channel will not be located close to shore. Use your depth finder , a good topographical map to find the orginal channel, then record the gps coordinates for future use. The creek arms are full of sunken timber are white perch magnets. The water color in these waters can range from clear to a greenish tinge to even stained. The color can vary on the season of the year. Because rainfalls in the spring will turn the water color murky.

Catching crappie in these lakes can be easier if you know where to go. The  papermouth in these reservoirs will migrate to new locations with the change of seasons. Crappie food will include small gizzard shad (in some reservoirs), small threadfin shad (in some reservoirs),crappie minnows, shiners, and insects. Crappie jigs with plastic grubs, or plastic tubes and tipped with wax worms will work fine for crappie bait when you fish near submerged timber areas in the creak arms. You can also catch crappie in the original creek channel using crappie live baits such as small gizzard shad, threadfin shad, crappie minnows, shiners, or small crayfish. You will want to use multiple crappie rods rigged with various crappie baits fished at different depths. Once you start to catch crappie anchor off and reset all your crappie poles to the depth and the bait you caught your first white perch. You can also use ultra light crappie crank baits trolled or casted casted along the edge of structure such as sunken timber or drop offs.

Durring the spring and summer large crappies will follow shad schools and feed almost entirely of fresh shad as their diet. If you you can find the shad schools you can have great success catching crappie. Some of the most popular crappie jigs you use are Gum Drop Tubes,Micro Jelly Jig,Bailey’s Crappie Magnet,Micromini Jig, and Mizmo Mini Tube.
