Wayne Gretzky – A Hockey Hero

| October 25, 2011

Maple Leafs

Among the most popular games in the world, you will find that ice hockey holds an enviable place. Even if ice hockey has not attracted such huge crowds yet, you must have realized that it is fast gaining in importance. The game of hockey immediately reminds you of the name Wayne Gretzky for he is the player who brought fame to hockey.

Wayne got into hockey when he was just a child. Being Canadian, it was natural that he grew up viewing Hockey Night on Canadian television. He started to practice hockey in the ice rink behind his house. Even when he was just a baby, he could instill that confidence in his father Walter’s mind, that his son was destined to become a great hockey player. Eight years was the minimum age for participation in organized hockey. Wayne started to play at the age of 6, and was scoring prolifically by the time he was 10.

He achieved the highest scoring rates for a lead player, and earned for himself the title of MVP (most valuable player) nine times. He played for and led the Edmonton Oilers and was the mastermind in taking the Stanley Cup four times within five years. Five times, he held the title of “the most Sportsmanlike Player.” His list of achievements is never ending.

Going through his career you will find that his scoring was inexhaustible, and he had taken the international ice hockey community by surprise, scoring 2857 career points – a figure that is yet to be matched.

Wayne dominated the hockey field for almost twenty years. He took hockey to new levels. A group of NHL players, broadcasters and coaches ranked him as the best.

During the last leg of his playing career, he could bring his grand total to 894 goals, and 1963 assists totaling 2857 points. Scoring these points in just 1487 career games, he managed to hit the highest point in his career.

He is considered as a symbol of sports the world over. Countless magazines have featured him to grace their covers. He has vocally represented a number of great causes before world forums. Though, Hollywood beckoned him when he retired from hockey, he declined. He now owns a restaurant in Toronto, adjoining the Hockey Hall of Fame. He has also added a clothing brand to his name. The hockey fantasy camp in Toronto, promoted and organized by him annually, is a great commercial success. Today he is designated director of Team Canada for the Winter Olympics, in addition to which he manages the Phoenix Coyotes hockey, of which he is the managing partner.

He is considered, along with Pele and Muhammad Ali as among the greatest athletes of the past century. He lived hockey, watched hockey and when he grew up, played hockey. In other words, hockey and Gretzky complimented each other. He now spends his time working to uplift hockey and its players. You cannot separate hockey and Wayne; they belong to each other and raise the levels of hockey together. Be in no doubt! Wayne Gretzky is the best hockey player of all time. The Ins And Outs Of The Sport – Figure Skating

| July 5, 2011

Figure skating is a technically demanding and graceful sport. A pleasure to watch as the skaters glide over the surface of ice.

But do you really understand what it is all about?

What makes one jump tougher to do than another?

How do the Judges award the scores?

With the popularity of figure skating growing, especially during the Olympic games we thought we should help you to understand what it is all about.

Here is an amazing fact. Figure skaters will beat every hockey player in a flat out race. They even beat them skating backwards.

If you ever attend a professional hockey game and sit near the ice you will find the above statement hard to believe. But it’s true. Figure skating is fast.

The reason for this is the hockey player is trained to use his power to accelerate in a quick burst of speed and to dart from side to side instantly. The figure skater is trained to glide with longer strides with less of the quick turns. They train to jump.

Figure skaters got their name from the compulsory figures they had to do in competition prior to 1990 when it was finally dropped. The skaters were required to perform figures tracing a pattern on the ice such as a figure eight. Not only that but they had to do it on the inside or the outside of the blade.

Once completed the judges would literally get down on the ice to check the tracing to see how close they came to perfection. Since figure skating is not an exact science, everything must be considered.

Points were awarded or lost if the figure went too far or there were additional tracings caused by wobbling or putting the other foot down. Skaters and audiences were no doubt extremely happy to hear they were eliminated.

Another one was during the ’06 Olympics when Dan Zhang had sustained a fall during their free skate. She was very brave but obviously in pain. She and her partner were able to finish their routine en route to claiming the silver medal.

Meanwhile, despite the change, some of the “old” johnny keep making a comeback. The quote bellow reinforces this view:
“As much as I would love to say that I think it’s the most important thing for the U.S. to have three spots for men, it’s not the most important thing for me. Even if we have one spot, as long as it’s mine, I don’t care,” …”(CAM COLE, Canwest News Service March 22, 2008 )

This is a free country. Everyone is entitled to his /her opinion; however the USFSA judging from the way Johnny has been treated does not seem to allow him this unalienable right. Apparently, they feel that Johnny should walk to their own drums. They probably hope that he grows up a bit and understands that while he is certainly entitled to his opinions, it wouldn’t hurt to show some conformity.

Johnny Weir has proven to be gracious in winning and in defeat. He stands head and shoulders above his critics. He is is a great skater and he should be treated with respect. He should be admired for his individuality as well as his skating talent
