The Best Of The World Series
Posted By Games Guy on September 10, 2010
Every season, the primary goal for any professional sports team is to win the coveted title game and to proudly hoist the championship trophy high above their heads. Every sport has its championship, but none is as beloved as Major League Baseball’s World Series; a best of seven series that celebrates our country’s national pastime. Whether you call it the “Fall Classic,” the “October Classic,” or simply “The Series,” this sporting event is equally as important as any holiday on the U.S. calendar. Its tradition is as American as Thanksgiving, as patriotic as the 4th of July and as anticipated as Christmas morning. Over the last century, the World Series has been evolved from a simple baseball series to one of the most the most celebrated finals in sports.
There have been countless moments throughout World Series history that have evoked both agony and ecstasy for baseball fans. However, the following events will forever be sown into the fabric of the Fall Classic as some of the greatest moments in its history:
At some point in every child’s life, he or she daydreams of hitting a ninth-inning, World Series-winning home run. The Pittsburgh Pirates’ Bill Mazeroski was able to make that dream a reality by hitting a 9th inning home run to defeat the unbeatable New York Yankees in Game 7 of the 1960 World Series. The Pirates were tied 9-9 to the crowd pleasing Yankees in the final inning of the final game. Mazeroski, who had only hit 11 homers in the regular season, hit a blast over left-fielder Yogi Berra’s head, forever engraving his name in World Series history.
In more than a decade of World Series play, there has only been one game where a pitcher was perfect. The New York Yankees’ Don Larsen turned dreams into reality by throwing a no-hitter in Game 5 of the 1956 World Series against the Brooklyn Dodgers. Throughout the duration of the game, his teammates obeyed the famous superstition that no one should talk to a pitcher throwing a no-hitter, or else risk jinxing the incredible feat. There’s no doubt that Don Larsen was the loneliest man in the stadium until the final out, when his no-no earned his place as one of the most memorable achievements in World Series history.
The next event may not be directly related to World Series play, but nonetheless establishes the magnitude of our national pastime’s championship series. During the 2001 World Series, only several weeks after the most devastating attack ever on United States’ soil, President George W. Bush confidently stepped on the mound of Yankees Stadium to the throw the ceremonial first pitch. Most ceremonial first pitches are thrown from much closer than the regulation distance; however, this one was legit. Covered head-to-toe in bullet-proof body armor and without a Secret Serviceman in view, President Bush threw a perfect strike to Yankees catcher, Todd Greene. If there was ever any skeptacism about baseball’s importance to the United States, Bush erased it that night.
Some may argue that the Super Bowl has surpassed the World Series as the ultimate sporting event, but there are plenty of sports fans would gladly choose World Series tickets over Super Bowl tickets any day. Rightfully so – a single football game simply cannot match the drama and unpredictability of a potential seven-game baseball series. For more than a century, the World Series has matched the champion of the American League against the champion of the National League. It provides sports fans and spectators alike the opportunity to witness the world’s best baseball talent on one stage. There are dozens of ways to get your hands on World Series tickets: official Major League box offices, ticket aggregator sites such as StubHub and Ticketmaster, or a sports travel agency. If you are traveling from a distance that will require air travel and hotel accommodations, working with a sports travel agency is the best and most convenient option. There are several premium sports travel agencies that sell World Series Packages at affordable rates. These packages most always include airfare, hotel accommodation, tickets, and transportation to and from the sporting events – helping make your time at the October Classis as enjoyable and stress-free as possible.
